Starlett (Star) Carter (she/her/hers) is the Co-Founder, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of Kanarys, Inc., a technology company that uses data and analytics to address DEI issues in the workplace.
Star leads all aspects of legal and operations of Kanarys, including the implementation of operational processes and the oversight of sales, marketing, DEI consulting, client success, and legal. Kanarys has been covered by Good Morning America, Forbes, CNBC, Yahoo Finance, AfroTech, Business Insider, and HR.com.
Star was named one of Entrepreneur magazine’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women of 2020 and one of AfroTech’s 31 Black women who have made historic firsts through her work at Kanarys. Star has made several television and podcast appearances and regularly speaks at notable DEI, technology, and leadership conferences like AfroTech, DEI Tech, Association of Corporate Counsel, Alliance of Technology and Women, and more, where she shares her expertise on DEI in the workplace, technology, entrepreneurship, operations and the law.
In her current role at Kanarys, Star leads many business development meetings with fellow corporate executives and leaders from various national affinity-based advocacy groups to discuss DEI. Given her daily discussions with C-suite executives to discuss their DEI efforts, Star truly has her finger on the pulse of diversity, equity, and inclusion in corporate America.
Prior to joining Kanarys, Star served as Counsel at Sidley Austin LLP, a large international law firm; and as a senior associate at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, a large international law firm. Star’s legal experience includes a focus on general corporate matters, contract review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, fund formation, and the representation of private equity firms and private/public companies in connection with acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures. Star has been recognized for her corporate practice by her inclusion in the 2016 Texas Rising Stars list, the 2013 Lawyers of Color Hot List, a selection of early-to-mid career minority attorneys from the southwest region, as well as the 2012 40 under 40 list by Dallas Furniture Bank for her professional achievements and civic efforts.
Star currently serves as the immediate past chairwoman of the board of directors for Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, a non-profit organization that provides free civil legal services to eligible low-income residents in Texas. Star received her Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 2006 and Bachelors of Business Administration with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003. She resides in Dallas, TX with her husband and two children.
